2005/06 NATWEST/BFA FRANCHISE SURVEY
This year's survey shows franchising continues to grow as an industry. Key statistics to come from the 2005 survey are:
The total number of franchisors has risen by nine per cent to 759.
- The number of franchisees dropped slightly to 33,800.
- The average age of a Franchisee is rising above the previous age of 44
- Annual tuover rose over the magic £10B to £10.3 billion.
- Franchising employs 330,000 people, a rise of one per cent.
- 92 per cent of franchisees are profitable.
- The average investment for a Franchise is £44,000, and average tuover £318K
- On average franchisees pay an estimated 8.1 per cent of their sales in recurring fees to their franchisors and an advertising Levy of 1.9%
- The two biggest sectors are Business & Commercial Services and Property Services, each accounting for 22 per cent of franchising systems.
- On average it takes a franchisee 5 months to decide to purchase a franchise and a further 2 months to be trained and set up in business. Therefore it can take a new franchisor up to 7 months to recruit their first franchisee. Lack of suitable franchisees continues to be the main barrier to growth, quoted by over of half of franchisors (55%). This is the first time the figure has exceeded 50%.
